How Frequently Should You Clean Your Ducts?

We recommend the HVAC system in your home be cleaned every 2-3 years However, the frequency of the cleaning will be determined by your particular circumstances. How Can I Know That My HVAC System Is Due For Routine Cleaning?

Duration

The time that has elapsed since you last cleaned your system is a good indication as to when it should be cleaned again. If the last routine cleaning was more than 2 years ago, then you are due for a cleaning.

Filter Check

We recommend checking your filter regularly to observe the level of dust it has gathered. If you observe more dust than you normally do, then your system may be due for a cleaning.

Cleaning Sticker

Our cleaning process includes placing a sticker on your duct work to let you know when next it should be cleaned. If we have handled your cleaning in the past, checking the date on this sticker is a good way to tell if you are due for routine cleaning.

Circulating dust

When there's a noticeable level of dust circulating in the air within your rooms, your ducts are probably due for a cleaning.

In addition to the dust

you could also notice an increase in the level of floating and lying hair follicles from you and your pets, if you have some. This is another indication that a routine cleaning should be done immediately.

Let Us Examine Some Factors That Can Influence How Frequently Your HVAC System Should Be Cleaned

The universal factor that affects the frequency of duct cleaning is time. As long as you use the property, you will need it cleaned every 2 to 3 years. However, some other factors can increase or decrease the time interval between successive cleanings. Let’s now consider the factors under both categories.

Factors That Increase The Frequency Of Cleaning

Dusty environmentIf your property is located in a dusty area with new construction or road work,  your furnace and ducts are likely to get clogged up with dust more quickly. Hence, they’ll need to be cleaned more frequently.

Household members -The number of occupants in your home can influence the frequency of cleaning required for your ducts as well. The more people you have, the more frequently you may need to clean your system.

Pets – When we clean the homes of pet owners, hair from pets constitutes a surprising portion of what we remove. This is one more reason you may need to clean your ducts more frequently.

Use of Your System – If you have air conditioning, you run your system almost the entire year vs if you only use your system for heating in the winter.

Factors That Can Decrease The Frequency Of Cleaning

A clean home can reduce the frequency of duct cleaning. When you take care to wipe surfaces and dust furniture frequently, your ducts are likely to stay clean for extended periods.

A Dust-Free environment is good news for your HVAC system. This is because most of the dust that enters your home is from the outside.

Effective filters – Clean, effective and frequently changed filters keep your HVAC system clean resulting in a home that is fresh and dust free!

FAQ's For Duct Cleaning

Asbestos was used in buildings from the 1950’s to the 1970’s. If your home was constructed during that time, it is possible that asbestos has been used in insulating or in insulative tape. You can look online for more information about how to identify asbestos in your home if you suspect it may be present.

Prestige Duct Cleaning is committed to the health and safety of our customers and staff. As a part of this commitment, we are undergoing COR certification, which is an intensive, safety focused certification program. In going through this process, asbestos has been identified as a health and safety concern, and we have recently developed a policy to properly manage this concern.

Asbestos must be properly contained and/or disposed of according to government regulations. Our staff and procedures are not qualified asbestos abatement and removal personnel, and therefore cannot do this for you.

Asbestos becomes dangerous when it becomes friable (easily crumbles and releases fibers). Due to the aging of asbestos building materials, there is a high possibility that this could happen when our equipment puts pressure on your heating system. Due to this possibility and for your health and safety, we have a zero tolerance policy for asbestos.

We do not have a referral for an abatement company, but we recommend you search out a reputable, qualified company to assess your home – they will be found under the term “asbestos abatement”. Once the concerned area has been investigated and/or the asbestos removed, go online or call us to schedule your furnace and duct cleaning service. At the time of booking, please email/fax us the official asbestos documentation.

FAQs For Duct Cleaning

The air that you and your family breathe inside your home is delivered through your furnace and duct work. It gathers dirt, dust and debris from many sources inside and outside your home. If you are moving into a new home, have had renovations done or there has been construction in your neighbourhood you need to have your ducts cleaned for the health of you and your family.
Every 2 -3 years should be sufficient. Individual considerations such as number of people and/or pets in the home, if anyone in the home suffers from allergies or asthma, if your system also provides air conditioning or there has been recent renovations are all factors that would affect the frequency of cleaning.
This is an extremely unfair and dishonest way to provide pricing for duct cleaning services. We charge a base price for the furnace cleaning and up to 10 vents and the additional vents are priced accordingly. The number of additional vents are indicative of the size of the home and associated main trunk lines and the work required to compete a thorough cleaning of the entire HVAC system. A company who charges flat rate pricing has to save costs somewhere…either by overcharging for a smaller home or under cleaning a larger home.

Happy with the service overall. The Gentlemen were courteous, friendly and did a great job. Small issue/suggestion: I noticed there was a lot of dust blow on the furnace room floor, boxes and mudroom that I had to clean up after they left. Wish they had doublechecked and cleaned up the mess created.
